Biography

Esmat is an independent publisher, an instigator of ideas, a producer and a whimsical researcher in cultural history. Esmat publishes and circulates a collection of printed material that centers emotions and affects as entryways to understand contemporary artistic and cultural productions. Esmat’s collection spans across styles, languages and mediums of visual culture. The publications in Esmat’s collection probe the reader’s curiosity about visual culture and its accompanying languages of criticism.

Esmat’s namesake is a character played by actress Sanaa Younis in a 1970s film called Genon Al-Shabab (dir. Khalil Shawky).

Esmat Publishes solicits publication through proposals and by inviting authors to work on specific publications. If you feel we should be working together, get in touch with a proposal.
